We've been making our 6 month old his baby food. I was wondering if there were any other parents who had done this - what combos worked for you? Did you use any spices - like curry or garlic - if you did - when?
Any advice would be great!

Just made several batches of food for our 7 month old grandson yesterday. I found the applesauce/sweet potato combination to be yummy.
We didn't add any flavorings yet. We froze ice cubes of the pureed foods.
I did all this over 30 yrs ago for our kids. I know we did not have to fight to get them to eat different things because they were used to the taste of our table food, just ground or blended.
Probably as he gets to 9 months and is eating pieces of food, he'll be getting the real flavors of Mom's cooking.
Just don't go too fast as you introduce new foods. We always did it every 3-4 days. It gives their intestinal tract time to adjust and let you know if there are problem foods that upset their system or food allergies.

Start with some unique combos now! It really makes a difference when they choose things as they get older. With my DD we stuck to what was the norm. And she's a little more picky- although loves veggies as that is what she ate most often. With DS I bought a fabulous book by Annabel Karmel and made my son actual recipes. His favorite baby food was an Indian Korma of all things. And start introducing those herbs and spices now in small bits. Both my kids moved on to table food around 9 months, so that early intro prepared DS for Mom's cooking. He's a much more adventurous eater than his big sister.

There are several very good baby food cookbooks on the market that help give you an idea of what to introduce when, as well as giving fantastic recipes that are gentle enough for baby's system while also introducing them to the world of food. A search on Amazon brings up dozens of options...

Yes Yes Yes! -we were just talking about that the other day -but we had a small Cuisinart- we called it a "mush maker" and made baby food out of whatever we prepared for the meal. A few thoughts - we never salted or heavily seasoned (although the favorite meal turned out to be a slice of pepperoni pizza....), our children were introduced to solids only after 6 mos of milk, and we did try to watch what and when we introduced different foods.
But think about it, you have chicken, peas, and rice or potatoes for dinner - why not "mush make it" for your child into their meal? We used milk or water for the consistency and made enough for lunch the next day. We would do each food separately most of the time. The benefits of healthier food - no sodium, sugar, or preservatives, and no cost were obvious. The fact that they ate everything and didn't get into a single food fatuation was an added bonus. The boys are now 18 and 14 with no food allergies and try new foods all the time.
