I've been keeping a food diary for about 5 weeks and been pleased at how just doing that has helped me reduce portions and calories. One frustration is having a hard time reducing snack calories particularly for crunchy, salty, sweet snacks. The snack/dessert recipes in the Eating Well Cookbook (which is great btw) are too healthy to satisfy my cravings. They are more like mini-meals for me. For a craving snack I need something more like junk food. So any ideas on ways to cut calories on snacks that are similar to chips or cookies?
I feel as though I've made great progress with the help of the book. It's helped me see what I'm doing and knowledge is power.
Wow! It was really a pain to get registered to reply, but I finally got it...
I want to suggest popcorn to you. I think 3 cups popped is about 100 calories, but that's not the microwave junk. We use an air popper. Watch what you put on it, though. I like a bit of fine sea salt, my kids like powdered sugar (we have a fine screen sprinkler that drops more or less a dusting over everything).
It's not movie theater treat style, but it's a whole grain, salty, and might meet your need.
