The NYT has a great blog postabout how restaurant chefs think is an appropriate portion size in relation to what the USDA considers to be an appropriate portion size. Check it out!

We are killing ourselves in this country with portion sizes, especially in restaurants. The increase in plate size shown in a recent Washington Post article is scary. Also the increaase in the size of the glasses used for alcoholic drinks makes me wonder why there are not more DWI citations and accidents.
The best way is to do what we do, bring home leftovers. It will take a great change in this country to get portion sizes changed to something close to normal.
Usually when we dine out I look at what is on the plate when we are served and divide out how much I'll eat and then bring the leftovers home. There was one time we ate at a new local restuarant ... Irish pub themed. I had my portion of Guiness Beef Stew and had 4 other lunches out of what I brought home.
