The True Price of Ethanol

As the push continues to find alternative sources of fuel, ethanol has become one of the poster children. Made from corn, the increased demand is affecting food prices around the globe. Between Sept 06 and Jan 07, the price per bushel nearly doubled.

Here's an an interesting story from the LA Times that says that a study by Stanford predicts that ethanol could produce more ground-level ozone than gasoline. Hmmm...

Another problem as I understand it is that we put more energy into making ethanol than gasoline. And by any physics standards we obviously get less energy out of any energy source than you put into processing it so ethanol is a lose-lose situation. That some how is a non sequitor to using it to get us off gasoline which is running out.

You are all following into a big trap here. Using corn ethanol for fuel has nothing to do with the rising food prices, it is just an excuse to raise food prices and scare people so that big oil doesn't lose its market share. My inlaws were corn farmers for years who ended up bankrupt under cheap corn prices and my father in law ended up killing himself so my mother in law would at least have the insurance money. So don't hand me the b.s. the ethanol is raising grocery prices, it is just an excuse to raise prices and scare people. You can make ethanol out of soybeans, wheat stalks, all kinds of these not just corn. Please don't get sucked in by the lie, farmers are not the people getting rich off of this and we will not starve to death. If you want to worry about something worry about the fact that most of the honey bees in this country are dieing and they are gone none of us will be eating anything. That is a much bigger problem than the bogus ethanol scare!
