Hello everyone! I have a few questions about diabetes, but first I will introduce myself and tell my story so the questions make more sense.
My name is Amanda Stewart and I'm 20 years old. I've been married for almost two years and have no children, but we have several furry ones! Lol. I work at a local hospital as a secretary and enjoy my life overall.
I have had a few run-ins with diabetes throughout my life but never with myself, personally. I have a strong family history and even lost my mom to diabetes in early 2008. But that's not why I'm here strangely enough. Life has thrown me a definite left hook.
The other day [Friday, in fact] my husband went to donate blood and was turned away because he had too much sugar in his urine. So much so that the nurse was very alarmed and she had years of experience! We tried to get him in to see the doctor but we have to wait until Thursday. So when I got home I tested his blood sugar with a tester I had in case of emergencies. His numbers were through the roof! His first test was 294!! Just out of curiosity I
AVERAGED the first seven tests and the number was 337!! I couldn't believe it. He has a family history but no one close to him [like mother or father] has known diabetes, and he is not over-weight. So, this all was quite a shock.
Our heads are spinning but we now action is needed. Healthier eating is going to be a big part of it. Hence, why I joined! Lol. So, here are my questions!
1. How did you take the news that either you or a loved on was diagnosed with diabetes?
2. What did you do immediately to help lessen the effects of diabetes?
3. What are some of your favorite meals that are diabetes safe?
4. What tips or hints can you give me and my husband to quiet my husband's big appetite?
Sincerely,
Amanda C. Stewart
